Amazon vs Netflix

Last month, Amazon made waves by announcing that it has entered into a multi-year content licensing agreement with HBO that will make Amazon Prime Instant Video the online-only subscription home for HBO scripted shows like Deadwood, Six Feet Under, The Wire, and, yes, The Sopranos. The two companies said that previous seasons of current HBO titles — like Girls, The Newsroom and Veep — will become available over the course of the multi-year agreement, approximately three years after airing on HBO.
The news of the agreement came as a blow to competitor Netflix, who two days earlier had touted a Morgan Stanley survey that found 17% of respondents viewed Netflix as the service that offered the best original programming, second only to – you guessed it – HBO. (It’s worth noting that Netflix subscribers who pay an extra $7.99 to receive DVDs as well as online streaming can get HBO content on DVD. So if you want to catch season 1 of The Wire, you can pay Netflix $15.98 per month and wait for them to send it to you. If you only pay $7.99 for Netflix streaming, you don’t have any HBO access. And now that Amazon has linked up with HBO, nor do you have any hope for Netflix-related HBO access.)
